The Lunar Chronicles is so close to my heart! I absolutely adore this series since I love a good fairy tale re-telling and scifi book and this series is a fusion of both genres!! And the characters are just so lovable, I would not mind returning back to this world!

This book was the first contemporary book I have ever read and it was such a beautiful story. I also loved the simplicity of the novel. It was one of those light, cute, and genuinely sweet life stories with a valuable theme highlighted throughout.

I am so late on this series and I don’t know why lol It has been sitting on my shelf forever and I did not pick it up until a month ago 😦 So far I am enjoying it and Percy is just so snarky, I love it OMG!! I have a feeling I will be flying through this series.

Angelfall Book Review (Spoiler Free)

angelfall.jpg

Author: Susan EE

Publisher: Skyscape

Pages: 283

Rating: 5/5

Genre: Young Adult (a few violent scenes)

GoodReads

OH MY GOODNESS!!! I had a feeling I was going to like this book from all the positive reviews but I never thought I would love it this much!! This is definitely one of the best post-apocalyptic books I have ever read!! Despite being a quick read, you never feel that the world is underdeveloped or out of place. I think Susan did a great job in providing us the correct amount of detail to immerse the readers into the story without having to make us feel that we are in an impractical world.

Summary:

In summary, Angelfall starts off approximately six weeks after the apocalypse where angels have descended onto the Earth and demolished the entire world. Humans are now fighting to survive from the gangs which terrorize the streets during the day and the supernatural strike fear into their hearts during the night. Penryn and her family, including her mother and her wheelchair bound little sister, and trying to live through this world just like any other survivor. One night when they are trying to find a safe shelter, she witnesses a huge struggle between a group of angels. These warrior angels end up badly injuring their victim, an angel named Raffe, and they go as far as to even tearing off his wings. Moreover, they also fly away with Paige and Penryn is willing to do whatever it takes to get her sister back, including making a deal with the enemy angel.

Characters:

  1. Penryn – Brave, Determined, Stubborn; Penryn is definitely one of those characters who you grow to admire throughout the course of the novel. From the start, she takes full ownership of taking care of her family and is especially protective and caring towards her little sister, Paige. She has a great balance of being brave but also being warmhearted. Although she can be a bit stubborn at times, I feel that in the end she always tries to do what she thinks is right and I admire her for that.
  2. Raffe – Sarcastic, Bold, Fighter; As soon as Raffe was introduced in this book, I knew that he was going to be an interesting character with a lot of history which we will soon uncover. I think this mystery behind him is what makes his character so alluring. I will say that there were times when I was laughing out loud because of his witty and sarcastic comments: “My friends call me Wrath. My enemies call me Please Have Mercy. What’s your name soldier boy?” LOL I CANT jlawlaugh
  3. Mrs. Young – Schizophrenic, Paranoid, Multi-facetted; Penryn’s mother is an interesting character due to her condition and you cannot place her as a villain or a victim. I feel that at times she does things which are shocking but some other times, you see her human characteristics take over and see her capabilities as a mother.
  4. Paige – Naive, Wheelchair bound; OMG she is a sweetheart ❤

In conclusion, this book truly surprised me 🙂  I think Susan did a great job in taking a different route for the YA dystopian/apocalyptic genre by incorporating the concept of fallen angels. She also created a ominous, dangerous, and mysterious world which is sure to send shivers through your spine while reading certain scenes. It is quite dark but she also does a great job in delivering witty banter and sassy dialogues between the characters for some comic relief. The story is immediately gripping from the first chapter and you can quickly sense the danger of the world that Penryn is in. This is another reason why it is so captivating and such an addicting read. Nearly all the chapters end with a cliffhanger and you have no choice but to continue reading! THE CLIMAX AND PLOT TWISTS WERE JUST INSANE! I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series!

Have any of you read the Angelfall series? Let me know in the comments!! 🙂

Until next time, keep reading!

A Court of Thorns And Roses Book Review (Spoiler Free)

acotar

“Be glad of your human heart, Feyre. Pity those who don’t feel anything at all.”

Author: Sarah J. Maas

Publication: Bloomsbury USA Childrens

Pages: 416

Rating: 4/5

Genre: YA/New Adult Fantasy (few mature content)

GoodReads

I finally did it guys! I picked up my first ever Sarah J. Maas book – A Court of Thorns and Roses! I am pretty new to the book community and ever since I started, I always hear about Sarah’s books whether it be the Throne of Glass series or the ACOTAR series and almost every booktuber or blogger I know had given them stellar reviews. I just had to know what all the hype was about so I decided to take this novel with me on vacation and during those long hours on the flight, I began to read away!

In summary, ACOTAR is loosely based on Beauty and the Beast and it starts off with a girl named Feyre who is hunting in the woods to feed her impoverished family and ends up killing a wolf who is actually a faerie. In order to seek justice for this innocent death, the High Lord of the Spring Court, Tamlin arrives to her home and forces her to spend her life in the faerie realm as punishment for her crime. When she first arrives to the estate, Feyre wants nothing but to escape from her captor. Due to their history, she despises the faeries since she knows they are responsible for the enslavement and torture of innocent humans. However, during her time in the Spring Court, she realizes that the faerie realm is at a very delicate state since there is a form of darkness sweeping their lands. Through her relationship with the other faeries, she realizes that they may not all be as cruel as she once thought they were. Her bond with Tamlin begins to grow in something more deep and meaningful but it also faces potential destruction. Within time, she discovers that she must find a way to fight back against the darkness in these lands or else it would bring the downfall of all faerie lands and even the annihilation of the human world as well.

Characters:

  1. Feyre – Cold, Hard-working, Independent. When I first started reading this book, I did not completely love her character. It was only in the second half of the book, where we see her character being tested and this was when I began to like her a little more. She was able to break through the walls she had built around her and began to showcase her feelings. By doing so, her character began to grow. I also did appreciate how she took care of her family 🙂
  2. Tamlin – Brooding yet gentle, kind. I did enjoy some bits of Tamlin’s character throughout the novel but I did not completely adore him to the point where I ultimately shipped Feyre/Tamlin as the ultimate OTP lol There were times when he would try to be kind to Feyre or try to awkwardly offer her assistance in any way but being the apathetic person she is, she would usually just shrug him off. You could tell that beneath the brooding appearance, he is quite sweet.

tiffany gif.gif

  1. Lucien – Snarky, loyal. One of my favorite parts of this book was the friendship between Feyre and Lucien. I absolutely loved his character and also liked seeing the relationship between him and Feyre grow. Loyalty is one of the best qualities he has and I truly admired him for that.
  2. Rhysand – Mysterious, Clever, Playful. At this point I would say that I do not have a definite, clear stance on his character since I feel like he does certain good things but other times I am not sure as to what his motives are for the other actions he does. I will say that I did look forward to his scenes in the book since he was an interesting character to read about. And his dialogues were quite amusing at times!

“Humans all look alike to me.”

lol k Rhysand . . .

elsa-laugh

My Thoughts:

From the start, I already fell in love with Sarah J. Maas’s writing. She has the ability to completely captivate you and draw you into the fantastical world she builds. What I also found interesting was how the faerie political system was organized into the different courts. Sarah also further builds on her world by providing the different species of faeries and how different they are from one another which added to creating a rich and realistic world.

I will say that more than half the book moved very slow due to the world building and romance development. It was only around the 250-300 page range when the story started to pick up the pace. Most of the thrilling aspect of the book was towards the end and this was the time where it became quite an addictive read which is why as a whole, I gave this book a 4/5 rating.

Have any of you lovelies read ACOTAR? What did you all think of it? Also . . . have you all seen the cover for the third book? It is gorgeous!! 🙂

Until next time, keep reading everyone!

The Doon Series Review (Spoiler Free)

doon

“I was his nightmare and my destiny his ultimate destruction.”

Author: Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon

Publication: First Book on August 20th 2013 by Zondervan

Pages: About 360 per book

GoodReads

Rating: 4.5/5

Doon was definitely a light read compared to the other novels I have read this past month but sometimes its nice to take a break from a heavy dense book and move to something more lighter. Doon was the exact break I needed.

Doon follows two best friends, Veronica and MacKenna who travel to Scotland for a vacation and end up discovering another Kingdom/World which can only be accessed through a special bridge using two rings from MacKenna’s great aunt. Veronica also experiences the Calling where she sees a mysterious Scottish man who actually ends up being the Prince of the enchanted land they discover. The girls, along with the two princes of the land discover a dark secret of Doon and together they work together in order to break the evil enchantment.

Characters

  1. Veronica – Calm, Patient, Loves to Read – Veronica, also known by MacKenna as Vee, yearns to escape from her domestic life and the only one way she does that is through reading books and this is what makes her a believer and also quite a dreamer as well. Her motives are solely romance oriented in the first book but it is understandable why due to her past; however, once we move past the first book she grows to become a leader and voice for the people of Doon. Her character growth was truly remarkable.
  2. MacKenna – Bold, Daring, Rash – MacKenna is quite the opposite of Veronica but she still admires Vee and values her friendship which is one of the reasons I absolutely love this book. We do not have a lot of YA novels which focus on female friendship but this series executed this theme beautifully. I really admired how the two girls were able to support one another despite the overwhelming obstacles thrown at them.
  3. Jamie -Determined, A bit Cold, Leader – When we first meet Jamie, he is not how he first appears as in Veronica’s Calling and that made him more intriguing. Over the course of the novel we do see different sides to him and the struggles he is facing and I personally loved seeing his character develop throughout the series (although my heart nearly died a bit at the last book – those who have read it, know what I am talking about lol)
  4. Duncan – Lively, Kind, Captain of the Guard – Duncan is an interesting character since he is not in line for the throne since he is not first born, however, he has such a strong support and commitment to his brother which is quite admirable.

I have to admit the last book was my favorite since it really did heighten the stakes and we see characters pushed to their limits. Overall, I really enjoyed this series and I highly recommend it if you love Scotland, magical realms, magic/sorcery, friendship, romance and adventure.

Beauty and the Beast Book Tag!

the-beauty-and-the-beast-book-tag

Thanks to the wonderful, the lovely, the incredible icebreaker694! Please check out her blog, It’s amazing! And to the creator, Kristy and the Cat Read!!

1. “TALE AS OLD AS TIME” – A POPULAR THEME, TROPE OR SETTING YOU WILL NEVER GET BORED OF READING.

I think for me it will probably be the “misunderstood bad boy”. Now this isn’t a person who mistreats the female lead, but maybe acts cold, mysterious or kind of shut off from the world due to their back story or bad past. An extreme example would be Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows and Warner from Shatter Me  and a lesser extreme may be Captain Thorne from the Lunar Chronicles and Four from Divergent. I do  understand that sometimes this is over done, but when authors can incorporate a “bad boy” character with a lot of character depth and development while simultaneously making them relateable, then we as readers are able to feel for them. And as we see them reform with the female lead’s interactions and relationship, it makes them quite intriguing.

2. BELLE – A BOOK YOU BOUGHT FOR IT’S BEAUTIFUL COVER THAT’S JUST AS BEAUTIFUL INSIDE TOO

cinder

Now isn’t this cover just gorgeous? The best part of it all, is that the actual story is beyond beautiful. I have heard so many people talk about the Lunar Chronicles and I was hesitant to pick it up since it was a 4 part series. However, I did decide to give this a chance since the sci-fi twist to fairy tale re-tellings sounded quite intriguing to me and I am happy to say that this series has become one of my favorite series of all time!

3. BEAST – A BOOK YOU DIDN’T EXPECT MUCH FROM BUT PLEASANTLY SURPRISED YOU.

dark

When I first picked up this book, I honestly was not expecting much since this was classified under a post-apocalyptic genre and I  believed it would follow a similar route that other dystopian books do. However, I was surprised at the interesting twist the author added to this story. It does not follow the same plot line of most dystopian books such as a plague destroying the earth or corrupt individuals overtaking the government. Instead a natural disaster serves as an “awakening” to the evil within individuals. It goes to question humanity itself – Are we either good or bad? Or despite how good a person may seem, will there always be a bit of evil inside them?

4. GASTON – A BOOK EVERYONE LOVES THAT YOU DON’T

red queen

Now, it is not that I didn’t like this book. I actually enjoyed the setting and the set up but I found it to be too predictable in the end. Since I was able to guess the plot twist, it ended up falling flat for me. However, I am planning to continue on with the series to see the direction the plot moves in 🙂

5. LEFOU – A LOYAL SIDEKICK YOU CAN’T HELP BUT LOVE MORE THAN THEIR COUNTER PART.

shatter.jpg

KENJI FOREVER ❤

I absolutely adored Kenji in the Shatter Me series! He is definitely one of the characters who you can’t help but admire. At first he did seem a bit goofy and silly but he really did help the main character, Juliette, through her difficult times and the advice he gave her when she was falling apart really made me admire him even more. A loyal character indeed.

6. MRS POTTS, CHIP, LUMIER & COGSWORTH – A BOOK THAT HELPED YOU THROUGH A DIFFICULT TIME OR THAT TAUGHT YOU SOMETHING VALUABLE

I actually have two series for this one. I read both of them during two different but very difficult moments in my life but while reading these books, they offered some valuable messages which I still carry with me to this day.

dashner-maze-runner-series

The Maze Runner: There is nothing more valuable than friendship. When I went through the most difficult part of life, my friends were there for me to recover mentally and emotionally. As an introvert, I am not quite comfortable expressing myself but I found that when you do, you can really grow from the care and comfort of others.

lunar-chronicles-by-marissa-meyer

The Lunar Chronicles: Always have hope. Let’s face it. Life sucks. You are going to be thrown in situations you don’t want to be in and faced with prejudice and judgement from members of society. Time is never going to stop for you so the only thing you can so is just pick yourself up and keep going.  And sometimes, its not a terrible thing to hit rock bottom since there is only way left to go and that’s UP!

7. “SOMETHING THERE” – A BOOK OR A SERIES THAT YOU WEREN’T INTO AT FIRST BUT PICKED UP TOWARDS THE END.

raven

The Raven Cycle was one of the series that I had on my TBR for very long time. I guess the reason I didn’t pick up the first book was because when I read the summary, it sounded as if it would be solely romance oriented. However, I found out that this was not the case and that there was a lot more complexity added to the plot with the diverse characters. This series was unlike anything I have ever read and I am so glad I decided to give it a shot!

8. “BE OUR GUEST” – A FICTIONAL CHARACTER YOU’D LOVE TO HAVE OVER FOR DINNER

hermione.gif

When I first read the Harry Potter books, the character that I automatically connected with was Hermione Granger. Growing up in an Asian household, I took my studies very seriously when I was young and seeing a studious character like her made me realize that knowledge is power and with it, you can conquer the world 🙂

Halloween Read-a-thon

This was created by Lauren@WonderlessReviews,so if you are interested in joining check out the original post for the details here.

On a Side Note, creepy clowns have been spotted roaming around my area after dark

jlaw

. . . . and one was seen on the college campus. If there is one thing I absolutely hate in this world, its clowns – they look happy but ARE THEY REALLY??? (I am totally sane, I swear!)

However, here is my TBR!! (These gorgeous banners are made by Lauren herself)

costume-party

🕸 Pretty self explanatory. There’s no “guidelines” if you think a cover is creepy for whatever reason then it counts!

fht-x350

Ok, how can you not be freaked out from this cover? It looks extremely creepy and I am pretty sure I will probably have nightmares about this story but you know what, it’s October so why not?

haunted-house

🕸 By Supernatural or Paranormal I mean books that feature things such as: ghosts, vampires, witches, werewolves ect.

three-dark-crowns-1

Guys, this book sounds so creepy! It follows three royal sisters who must fight to the death in order to win the crown. There is a fantasy twist in it since there is magic and superpowers! I am really looking forward to this one!

urban-legends

🕸 In my opinion people are scarier than monsters so for Horror or Thriller this means a book where real people are the ones who are causing all the scariness.

fever.jpg

I only have one thing to say: WICKED is Good.

witching-hour

🕸 Again, pretty self explanatory. Fun fact: the witching hour is 3am-4am, but obviously I’m not going to force you all to read at that time 😅. Unless you’re like me and have insomnia. So just read a book after the sun has set! This doesn’t have to be done in one night! You can read a book at night for the duration of the read-a-thon.

crooked-kingdom-315.png

This one is probably on everyone’s October TBR haha I actually just finished reading this last night and OMG MINDBLOWN!

trick-or-treat

🕸 There’s two options for this challenge. You can choose TRICK and read a scary book you’ve been putting off OR you can choose TREAT and read any book you want from ANY genre (not just horrors ect.)

I choose Treat!

percy.jpg

I have a confession – I am one of the few who have NOT read the Percy Jackson series. I am so determined to start on it this month!

all-hallows-eve

🕸 Read six books! Your sixth book can be any scary book you want. Only do this if you want! I know how it is to feel intimidated by read-a-thons so I really wanted to try and make this as relaxing as possible. There’s probably no way I’m going to be able to do this, but it’s fun to try!

Oh dear! I’m not even sure if I’ll be able to read all the books listed haha If I have time, I’ll add another book 🙂

That was my TBR.

SIDE NOTE: If any of you need a scary book recommendation, I would say 172 Hours on the Moon. OMG I couldn’t read this night! I will say that the first half of the book is a bit slow but it gets so intense in the second half! Let me know your thoughts if you have read it!

172 hours

Thanks to Lauren for hosting this spooky Read-A-Thon!

REAL NEAT BLOG AWARD (Part 2)

real-neat-blog-award

Hello everyone! Time for another Blog Award🙂 Yayyyy! A huge thank you to Ellie @CapitolBooks for nominating me for this award! You can check out her post HERE. And if you haven’t already done so, please give her a follow! I love reading her posts! 🙂

I know I have already been nominated for this Award before but I really loved her questions and I wanted to share my answers with you all 🙂

RULES

  • Thank and link the blogger that nominated you.
  • Answer the 7 questions that the nomination has provided you.
  • Create 7 questions for your nominees.
  • Nominate 7 other bloggers.

QUESTIONS

1. What is your favorite book from 2016?

Gosh, its hard to choose just one. My favorite books would probably be the entire Lunar Chronicles series, An Ember in the Ashes and Six of Crows. However, with the release of Crooked Kingdoms and the future release of Heartless, we may have more to add to the list lol

2. Do you prefer paperback or hardcover books?

Personally I enjoy reading paperbacks but I like the way hardcovers look on my bookshelves 🙂

3. How long have you been blogging for?

I am pretty new to the book community as a whole. I only started this blog around May 2016 so it hasn’t been long but I received so much support from you all so I am quite happy that I decided to start this blog.

4. What is your favorite genre?

High Fantasy/Magic/Sci Fi

5. E-books or physical books

Physical books for sure! I love the feel of having a book in your hand while reading, I don’t know why lol

6. Where is your favorite place to read?

My BED 🙂 Light up a candle, snuggle into a warm blanket and then read away into the night!

7. Fantasy or contemporary books?

Definitely fantasy! I generally view reading books as a way to escape from my real world and immerse myself into a fantastical world of royalty, magic, sci-fi, etc. So reading contemporary isn’t that different from reality so I find it hard to embrace this genre. However, I am trying to read a few contemporary books to change this. If you have any suggestions let me know below!

MY QUESTIONS:

  1. Do you have any hyped book which did not live up to your expectations? Why?
  2. Would you rather be a cyborg or a wizard/witch?
  3. Choose the most ruthless villain from any books you have read
  4. What’s your favorite thing about blogging?
  5. What is the most scariest book you have ever read?
  6. Coffee or Tea?
  7. Were there any books/characters that had a positive impact in your life?
