Hey Everyone!!! I’m back again with more bookish news!

We recently got an exclusive preview and cover reveal for the next book in Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me series, Restore Me.

AND IT IS STUNNING 🙂

restore me.jpg

EW just revealed the news yesterday with an exclusive preview as well! (I couldn’t help but giggle throughout it to be honest – It’s great to see the characters again) You can check out the full article HERE

And if you would like to see my full review of the series, you can check it out HERE

From the Tahereh’s small preview she revealed to EW, it looks like we will be getting dual POVs of both Juliette and Warner! Currently, this book is set to release on March 2018 and it terms of plot and content, we will probably be diving deep into the minds of both our characters so I am super excited to see how Tahereh will portray this. And having read her previous books to this series, I can definitely say that her writing is absolutely beautiful and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the next installment.

HOORAY FOR MORE KENJI ❤ Are you guys excited for Restore Me??? Make sure to add this to your GoodReads!

And until next time, I will see you all with more bookish posts soon! 🙂

The Book of Ivy Review (Spoiler Free)

BOOK OF IVY.jpg

“”. . we can’t choose who we love. Love chooses us. Love doesn’t care about what’s convenient or easy or planned. Love has its own agenda and all we can do is get out of its way.”

Author: Amy Engel

Publication: November 4th 2014 by Entangled Teen

GoodReads

Rating – 5/5

Genre: Young Adult, Dystopian

After experiencing the dreaded phenomenon we readers fear known as the reading slump, I am happy to say that I am officially out it! And this is all thanks to the latest book I finished: The Book of Ivy by Amy Engel. In general, I was pleasantly surprised by this dystopian novel. I have read plenty of books from this genre before but I think this one was just so fast paced and intriguing that I could not stop reading. If you are looking for quick and simple read with a rapid plot and great characters, then this book is best for you!

Summary:

The Book of Ivy follows a girl named Ivy Westfall after a brutal nuclear war which left the country divided between two families who yearned to rule the nation. This resulted in a division between those who supported the Westfalls, who eventually lost the feud and Lattimers, the family which gained power over the country. In order to keep the peace between the two sides, daughters of the losing side were to wed the sons of the winning group in a yearly ritual. Ivy Westfall is forced to marry the President’s son, Bishop Lattimer but she plans to bring her family back into power with a mission of her own – Killing Bishop Lattimer. The only problem is that the boy who she initially thought to be cruel and merciless, actually turns out to be the only person who understands her.

Characters:

  1. Ivy Westfall – Resilient, A bit reckless; I honestly liked Ivy as a character. I loved how she was strong enough to enter into this marriage alone with a heavy expectation placed on her and that she is not afraid to speak her mind.
  2. Bishop Lattimer  – Patient, Kind, Truthful; Bishop is probably the one guy who most girls want to end up with since he literally portrayed to as being Perfect but I guess that is also a flaw in his character. Sometimes being too naive is not always a good thing and I believe he does grow as a character in this book and maybe even more in the second book of the duology.

Overall Thoughts:

Despite taking on the trope of arranged marriages, I was surprised to see that there was more of a deeper societal/political aspect which was tackled within this novel. The romance does take a back seat and is not the major portion of the story which I appreciated. Amy also explores the different sides to marriages as well which I was not expecting. It definitely kept me intrigued and made me wonder about our current societal issues which many people may be facing.

This novel would definitely make you think what you would do if you were in Ivy’s position? And what really IS the right thing to do? This is another reason why I loved this book since the author did take her time to offer two sides to the story and make sure all the characters had layers to the personality. She makes it clear that while it is good to hold your ground in a conflict, it’s best to understand both sides properly before you act impulsively.

Overall, I thought that this was an awesome read and I just hope that I pick up the next book soon because THAT ENDING THOUGH!!!!!

Beauty and the Beast Book Tag!

the-beauty-and-the-beast-book-tag

Thanks to the wonderful, the lovely, the incredible icebreaker694! Please check out her blog, It’s amazing! And to the creator, Kristy and the Cat Read!!

1. “TALE AS OLD AS TIME” – A POPULAR THEME, TROPE OR SETTING YOU WILL NEVER GET BORED OF READING.

I think for me it will probably be the “misunderstood bad boy”. Now this isn’t a person who mistreats the female lead, but maybe acts cold, mysterious or kind of shut off from the world due to their back story or bad past. An extreme example would be Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows and Warner from Shatter Me  and a lesser extreme may be Captain Thorne from the Lunar Chronicles and Four from Divergent. I do  understand that sometimes this is over done, but when authors can incorporate a “bad boy” character with a lot of character depth and development while simultaneously making them relateable, then we as readers are able to feel for them. And as we see them reform with the female lead’s interactions and relationship, it makes them quite intriguing.

2. BELLE – A BOOK YOU BOUGHT FOR IT’S BEAUTIFUL COVER THAT’S JUST AS BEAUTIFUL INSIDE TOO

cinder

Now isn’t this cover just gorgeous? The best part of it all, is that the actual story is beyond beautiful. I have heard so many people talk about the Lunar Chronicles and I was hesitant to pick it up since it was a 4 part series. However, I did decide to give this a chance since the sci-fi twist to fairy tale re-tellings sounded quite intriguing to me and I am happy to say that this series has become one of my favorite series of all time!

3. BEAST – A BOOK YOU DIDN’T EXPECT MUCH FROM BUT PLEASANTLY SURPRISED YOU.

dark

When I first picked up this book, I honestly was not expecting much since this was classified under a post-apocalyptic genre and I  believed it would follow a similar route that other dystopian books do. However, I was surprised at the interesting twist the author added to this story. It does not follow the same plot line of most dystopian books such as a plague destroying the earth or corrupt individuals overtaking the government. Instead a natural disaster serves as an “awakening” to the evil within individuals. It goes to question humanity itself – Are we either good or bad? Or despite how good a person may seem, will there always be a bit of evil inside them?

4. GASTON – A BOOK EVERYONE LOVES THAT YOU DON’T

red queen

Now, it is not that I didn’t like this book. I actually enjoyed the setting and the set up but I found it to be too predictable in the end. Since I was able to guess the plot twist, it ended up falling flat for me. However, I am planning to continue on with the series to see the direction the plot moves in 🙂

5. LEFOU – A LOYAL SIDEKICK YOU CAN’T HELP BUT LOVE MORE THAN THEIR COUNTER PART.

shatter.jpg

KENJI FOREVER ❤

I absolutely adored Kenji in the Shatter Me series! He is definitely one of the characters who you can’t help but admire. At first he did seem a bit goofy and silly but he really did help the main character, Juliette, through her difficult times and the advice he gave her when she was falling apart really made me admire him even more. A loyal character indeed.

6. MRS POTTS, CHIP, LUMIER & COGSWORTH – A BOOK THAT HELPED YOU THROUGH A DIFFICULT TIME OR THAT TAUGHT YOU SOMETHING VALUABLE

I actually have two series for this one. I read both of them during two different but very difficult moments in my life but while reading these books, they offered some valuable messages which I still carry with me to this day.

dashner-maze-runner-series

The Maze Runner: There is nothing more valuable than friendship. When I went through the most difficult part of life, my friends were there for me to recover mentally and emotionally. As an introvert, I am not quite comfortable expressing myself but I found that when you do, you can really grow from the care and comfort of others.

lunar-chronicles-by-marissa-meyer

The Lunar Chronicles: Always have hope. Let’s face it. Life sucks. You are going to be thrown in situations you don’t want to be in and faced with prejudice and judgement from members of society. Time is never going to stop for you so the only thing you can so is just pick yourself up and keep going.  And sometimes, its not a terrible thing to hit rock bottom since there is only way left to go and that’s UP!

7. “SOMETHING THERE” – A BOOK OR A SERIES THAT YOU WEREN’T INTO AT FIRST BUT PICKED UP TOWARDS THE END.

raven

The Raven Cycle was one of the series that I had on my TBR for very long time. I guess the reason I didn’t pick up the first book was because when I read the summary, it sounded as if it would be solely romance oriented. However, I found out that this was not the case and that there was a lot more complexity added to the plot with the diverse characters. This series was unlike anything I have ever read and I am so glad I decided to give it a shot!

8. “BE OUR GUEST” – A FICTIONAL CHARACTER YOU’D LOVE TO HAVE OVER FOR DINNER

hermione.gif

When I first read the Harry Potter books, the character that I automatically connected with was Hermione Granger. Growing up in an Asian household, I took my studies very seriously when I was young and seeing a studious character like her made me realize that knowledge is power and with it, you can conquer the world 🙂

Halloween Read-a-thon

This was created by Lauren@WonderlessReviews,so if you are interested in joining check out the original post for the details here.

On a Side Note, creepy clowns have been spotted roaming around my area after dark

jlaw

. . . . and one was seen on the college campus. If there is one thing I absolutely hate in this world, its clowns – they look happy but ARE THEY REALLY??? (I am totally sane, I swear!)

However, here is my TBR!! (These gorgeous banners are made by Lauren herself)

costume-party

🕸 Pretty self explanatory. There’s no “guidelines” if you think a cover is creepy for whatever reason then it counts!

fht-x350

Ok, how can you not be freaked out from this cover? It looks extremely creepy and I am pretty sure I will probably have nightmares about this story but you know what, it’s October so why not?

haunted-house

🕸 By Supernatural or Paranormal I mean books that feature things such as: ghosts, vampires, witches, werewolves ect.

three-dark-crowns-1

Guys, this book sounds so creepy! It follows three royal sisters who must fight to the death in order to win the crown. There is a fantasy twist in it since there is magic and superpowers! I am really looking forward to this one!

urban-legends

🕸 In my opinion people are scarier than monsters so for Horror or Thriller this means a book where real people are the ones who are causing all the scariness.

fever.jpg

I only have one thing to say: WICKED is Good.

witching-hour

🕸 Again, pretty self explanatory. Fun fact: the witching hour is 3am-4am, but obviously I’m not going to force you all to read at that time 😅. Unless you’re like me and have insomnia. So just read a book after the sun has set! This doesn’t have to be done in one night! You can read a book at night for the duration of the read-a-thon.

crooked-kingdom-315.png

This one is probably on everyone’s October TBR haha I actually just finished reading this last night and OMG MINDBLOWN!

trick-or-treat

🕸 There’s two options for this challenge. You can choose TRICK and read a scary book you’ve been putting off OR you can choose TREAT and read any book you want from ANY genre (not just horrors ect.)

I choose Treat!

percy.jpg

I have a confession – I am one of the few who have NOT read the Percy Jackson series. I am so determined to start on it this month!

all-hallows-eve

🕸 Read six books! Your sixth book can be any scary book you want. Only do this if you want! I know how it is to feel intimidated by read-a-thons so I really wanted to try and make this as relaxing as possible. There’s probably no way I’m going to be able to do this, but it’s fun to try!

Oh dear! I’m not even sure if I’ll be able to read all the books listed haha If I have time, I’ll add another book 🙂

That was my TBR.

SIDE NOTE: If any of you need a scary book recommendation, I would say 172 Hours on the Moon. OMG I couldn’t read this night! I will say that the first half of the book is a bit slow but it gets so intense in the second half! Let me know your thoughts if you have read it!

172 hours

Thanks to Lauren for hosting this spooky Read-A-Thon!

Below is a quick recap of all the chapters within this collection of novellas

  1. The Keeper – Honestly, I will say that I didn’t completely enjoy this specific story since I thought it was just extra details and it didn’t really make me feel for any of the characters that much. It did give more background with Scarlet which I appreciated. In the second book we don’t really dive into her character – she was just searching for her grandmother – and we didn’t really get anything else or why she is so attached to her but I think this story shed more light on it. Maybe its because we didn’t see too much of their interactions in the second book and as a result, I couldn’t really understand their connection that well.
  2. Glitches – This story basically delineates how young Cinder first arrived at New Beijing and how she started her life with her Stepmother and Stepsisters. It slightly tugs on your heart and you start to see how Adri’s hate for Cinder began to grow.
  3. The Queen’s Army – This was a short story revolving around Wolf and how he was recruited into the Queen’s Army. I did enjoy reading about his character, the training process and how much he fought to not lose himself in the process.
  4. Carswell’s Guide to Being Lucky – You all know how much I love Thorne and this was just absolutely hilarious to read. Of course you will find the occasional witty, flirtations dialogue from Thorne and it also gives us a small background on his character when he was younger. Usually we see Thorne as a light hearted, fun character but in this story, we dive deeper into his character and discover why he makes certain choices
  5. After Sunshine Passes By – Sweet, Precious Cress. She is one of my favorite characters in the entire series and I loved the transformation she goes through within the Lunar Chronicles to be brave. This story truly does capture her innocence and it crushed my heart a bit. She must be protected at all costs!
  6. The Princess and the Guard – Heartbreaking. That’s all I can say about this one. It is definitely one of the darker chapters within this collection of novellas and we see how both Winter and Jacin grew up together and how their friendship evolved into something more. Tension also starts brewing with Queen Levana and Winter and we see her cruelty and jealousy for her stepdaughter in more detail. I grew to appreciate Winter a lot more after reading this novella so I am thankful that Marissa gave us more background of Luna.EMOTION.gif
  7. The Little Android – WHY DON’T YOU JUST TAKE MY HEART OUT ALREADY? DAMN THE FEELS WITH THIS STORY! I honestly had my doubts when starting to read this since it introduces new characters (with a a small appearance by an old character) and it was a re-telling of the Little Mermaid. Prepare yourselves before reading this. This is NOT the Disney version. I still thought it was quite moving and Marissa Meyer has a way of making you feel for her characters which is why I love her stories.em
  8. The Mechanic – Another one of my favorites since this story is basically the first meeting of Cinder and Kai in New Beijing but in Kai’s perspective. When I first read the Lunar Chronicles (Cinder), Kai automatically captured my attention in the first chapter so it was pretty interesting to read from his perspective. Very cute!
  9. Something Old, Something New – Swoon worthy! The Final Epilogue where we finally say goodbye to all these awesome characters. It had me feeling all sorts of FEELS!

Usually when I go into sequels, I prepare myself for the second book slump, BUT THIS BOOK OMG! I absolutely devoured it in one setting. Just as the first book, it was addicting straight from the start and I could not put it down. It was hands down, one of the best sequels I have ever read! If you liked the first book, you will definitely love the second. Bravo Sabaa Tahir! 🙂

PLOT

A Torch Against the Night is a sequel to one of the best books of 2015, An Ember in the Ashes which was in my opinion, an explosive debut in the YA genre. This book picks up exactly where we left our characters – Laia and Elias – and both are on the run from the Marital Empire in order to free Laia’s brother, Darin, from the Prison cells of Kauf. Along the way, we are reunited with old characters and introduced to new ones as well.We also see Helene, one of the most painful and heartbreaking perspectives to read. As the Blood Shiike, she is faced with the gruesome task: capture her best friend, Elias, and kill him. The World continues to grow brutal and merciless with the dark forces involving the Commandant, the power hungry Emperor Marcus and the sadistic Warden of Kauf. All in all, Sabaa Tahir delivered a faced paced and heart pounding sequel which would have readers yearning for the third book.

CHARACTERS

  1. Laia – Laia is one the characters who undergoes tremendous character development. To see her transform from the first book to how she is by the end of the second was an absolute delight. She isn’t perfect. She does make mistakes which she is not afraid to admit and I do admire that quality about her. From a resolute survivor she becomes a bold and goal oriented fighter.
  2. Elias – Elias is just . . . /fans self. I think I might love him even more than I did the first book. I have to add him to my book boyfriend list lol He is just beyond amazing. He goes through serious turmoil and anguish in this book and my heart just couldn’t take it at certain times. Despite all that, he is still strong, compassionate and courageous and that is something worth praising 🙂 Moreover, I also enjoyed reading those sly and sarcastic comments he had in his head every now and then. lol it did bring a bit of comic relief hahafang
  3. Helene – One of the best additions to the book was Helene’s perspective. I have to admit, I did not quite love her character in the first book, but I did enjoy reading about her in this one. Since she goes through so many heartbreaking and internal struggles,  I couldn’t help but feel for her but her character development was spectacular! She was the perfect blend of strength and vulnerability – something that made her seem more human.

Besides the character development, writing and world building, the actual plot within this book delivered twist after twist to the point where it was just mind blowing. Nearly every chapter ends with a cliffhanger and it was nearly impossible to put the book down. Her writing style works so well with the fast paced plot since it never once slows down or gets tiresome to read. Moreover, the amount of subtext, inspiring quotes, and dialogue between the characters are the devices which actually shed a light and a glint of hope in this brutal world and maybe even in every day life. That is what defines a 5 star book for me: when a book, regardless of genre, becomes relevant to your own life.

approval-reaction-gif

Now onto my my emotions which were pretty much all over the place with this book! Irritation, anger (maybe even rage at a few characters lol), fangirling over Elias lol, fear, heartache, depression. God, the list can go on haha

em

Overall, I was satisfied with the ending of this book but I definitely want to know more about the upcoming plot lines. With that being said, I will definitely keep a look out for the third book. It has already become one of my most anticipated reads!

Have any of you read the Torch Against the Night yet? Let me know your thoughts below!
