GoodReads

“We are each our own person, separate from our family, not wholly formed by our experiences. We decide who we want to be.”

So  . . . I don’t have this sort of reaction for the novels I read but OMG I teared up. THE EMOTIONS GOT TO ME! I was so invested! Anne Blankman has a way of effortlessly blending facts with fiction into something that’s so captivating and heart wrenching that you can’t help but be completely addicted to this work of art! 🙂 This duology is probably my most favorite historical fictions ever!

(Please note the summary below has minor spoilers for the first book, Prisoner of Night and Fog)

Summary (GoodReads):

The girl known as Gretchen Whitestone has a secret: She used to be part of Adolf Hitler’s inner circle. More than a year after she made an enemy of her old family friend and fled Munich, she lives with a kindly English family, posing as an ordinary German immigrant, and is preparing to graduate from high school. Her love, Daniel Cohen, is a reporter in town. For the first time in her life, Gretchen is content.

But then, Daniel gets a telegram that sends him back to Germany, and Gretchen’s world turns upside-down. And when she receives word that Daniel is wanted for murder, she has to face the danger she thought she’d escaped-and return to her homeland.

Gretchen must do everything she can to avoid capture and recognition, even though saving Daniel will mean consorting with her former friends, the Nazi elite. And as they work to clear Daniel’s name, Gretchen and Daniel discover a deadly conspiracy stretching from the slums of Berlin to the Reichstag itself. Can they dig up the explosive truth and get out in time-or will Hitler discover them first?

Characters:

Gretchen Muller – It’s amazing to see Gretchen’s growth from the first novel to the second. The amount of courage she has despite the heightened stakes in Germany is truly amazing to see. The girl we meet in the first book would have never made the hard choices she does in this novel and it is great to see that much growth within a character.

” . . she chose to see with her own eyes, however painful and ugly the view.”

Daniel – Daniel is such a great character! Because of his reporter background we can see how determined and passionate he is about finding the truth and bringing those at fault to justice and I loved seeing that part of him. I really wish we had Daniel’s perspective in this story just so we can learn more about him and his thought process. I definitely think it would have added an extra boost to the story telling within this story. I still enjoyed Gretchen’s perspective but I really liked Daniel’s character and would have liked to see a bit more from his perspective.

“I don’t believe that we can blame our actions on our upbringings. If we could, then nobody would be responsible for anything they do.”

My Review:

Setting – Although it took a couple of pages for the story to pick up pace, I ended up glued to the pages after about 50 pages. Blankman really captivates the reader with the high stakes and overall danger of Gretchen’s decision to venture into Germany during the Nazi reign. As soon as you enter the country, you are just filled with this sense of thrill, panic and worry for the characters. It was a rush of emotions!

emotion

Plot – While the author does use the Forbidden Love trope, the romance was handled so well. While it does form a major arc of the storyline, the author is careful to weave it into the novel in correct doses while simultaneously focusing on the journey of the characters. It is so realistic and heartwarming that you can’t help but wish they would find their happiness. As with the first book, I also loved the incorporation of psychology. It added an extra level of insight and knowledge to the book and in a way, helps us understand why people are the way they are.

Character Growth – The amount of effort and perseverance that Gretchen has towards locating Daniel is remarkable to see. The lengths of travel she takes to find him is truly sweet but also courageous.

Themes – There are quite a few themes and morals which the author incorporated into the novel such as exploring the concept of relationships whether it is within family, a lover or friends and how we need to have them in balance in order to truly live happily as a human being. Also, while psychology may allow us to understand another person’s mind or how they behave, everyone ultimately has a choice and they are responsible for their actions.

Overall, I honestly believe that this was a solid duology that aligned well with the course of history. As an author, it takes an extensive amount of research in order to produce a work of fiction during this time period. While this is a sensitive topic, I felt as though the author addressed the major concerns professionally.

Have any of you guys read this duology? What were your thoughts on it?

Until next time, keep reading and I will see you all soon with another bookish post!

Top Ten Tuesday – Favorite OST/ALBUMS

TTT-NEW

It’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday! For this week’s post, its an audio freebie so I decided to list my Top Ten Original Soundtracks and Albums/Artists.

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Without further ado, here is my list:

loveyourself

  1. BTS

If you have seen my previous posts, then this should be no surprise to you HAHA And if you are new here – Hi. Hello. Welcome 🙂  Let me introduce you to the artistic beauty that is BTS – a boy band from South Korea. My favorite would have to be the Love Yourself series which was something I was able to connect to with the intensity of the lyrics and the beauty of the musical composition. Such examples of the artistic quality of their music would be DNA and Serendipity, both which just stunning to listen to. I love that they could be dance tracks but they also have such magnificence within the lyrics. BTS also breaks the general stereotypes that boy bands only sing love songs with producing music which is empowering such as MIC DROP and IDOL. Other tracks I love include Outro Tear, Magic Shop and Answer: Love Myself which hold so much positivity and hope which is something that I am grateful for since it is difficult to maintain that attitude during the toughest points in your life. Being a true ARMY at heart, you better believe this girl is ready for their new album release on April 12th.

220px-Black_Panther_-_The_Album

  1. Black Panther

OK, I am in love with this film. Oscar worthy indeed! For this movie, I have to include both the original score as well as the album because they are equally amazing! All the Stars by SZA and Kendrick Lamar was my go-to song in 2018 and it still is today. I feel like I play it at least once every single day since it’s a song you can listen to whatever mood you are in. It’s uplifting, it’s beautiful, it’s powerful and OMG I love it! As for my favorite OST track, it would probably have to be the main theme Wakanda. Who can ever forget this iconic theme? And Killmonger! OMG I love that his theme has a hip hop vibe threaded into the track. It just suits the character so much. If you guys have not seen this movie yet, I highly recommend it because it’s awesome and everything you want in a movie! WAKANDA FOREVER!

220px-LionKingsoundtrackalbumcover.png

  1. Lion King

Oh gawd . . . I think I might tear up. If I were to share a bit of info about me, it is how much of an emotional impact this movie had on me. It brings back so much emotions, nostalgic memories (both happy and sad) and it’s just so powerful for an animated feature.  Hans Zimmer himself is just a Musical GOD in my opinion. Every track he created in this film has so much emotional weight that you can feel the anguish, pain, bliss, euphoria and empowerment. Some of my favorite tracks are Remember, Under the Stars and for the musical numbers, who can ever forget the majestic nature of Circle of Life and the humorous and joyful Hakuna Matata? I can’t wait to relive my childhood this July with the live action film! I will be bringing a bucket for my tears!

kung fu panda.jpg

  1. Kung Fu Panda

Since we are on the topic of Hans Zimmer’s musical brilliance, of course I had to mention Kung Fu Panda. Oogway’s theme is a track which resonates within my soul whenever I watch this film. With the addition of using the melancholy notes of the Ehru, it just tugs at your heartstrings. Its honestly one of favorite instruments ever!

lord of the rings.jpg

  1. Lord of the Rings/ The Hobbit

Whenever I hear Concerning Hobbits, I take a trip through memory lane. It’s so cute and fluffy and just puts your mind at rest – pretty much describes hobbits! I also adore the Breaking of the Fellowship. It’s a theme that was so iconic back in the day and it perfectly captures the emotions on screen. As for the Hobbit, I would definitely choose Sons of Durin – it’s so badass I can never forget that scene! Another track would be Courage and Wisdom – the one that broke my heart when I watched this in theaters.

dunkirk.jpg

  1. Dunkirk

So no surprise, its Hans Zimmer again. Musical scores are composed in such a way to capture the emotion on screen and relay it to the audience and I think this is a perfect example of that phenomenon. The amount of sacrifice and power was just beautifully captured in tracks such as Home. And the escalating tension and danger was seen in tracks like Mole. And if you have not seen this film, please do since this is one of the most brilliantly done war films that perfectly captures heroism and the fight to conquer the darkness even with fear running through our blood.

wonder woman.jpg

  1. Wonder Woman

This film not only made tremendous waves with the stunning introduction of a powerful female superhero but also with it’s complementary OST which is a combination of power, strength and wisdom and that just perfectly captures the essence of who Wonder Woman is. My favorite track would have to be No Man’s Land. This scene was EVERYTHING!! You don’t understand the amount of FEELss I went through when I saw this scene in theaters.

james horner.jpg

  1. Titanic

There was a time when I was obsessed with this soundtrack and I still adore a few tracks from the album. Some of which include Never an Absolution, Hymn to the Sea and Rose. The intensity of these tracks completely captured the romance on screen and it’s no wonder it was such a commercial success.  And let’s be real, JACK was ultimate goals!!

“He saved me, in every way a person can be saved.” ❤

mulan.jpg

  1. Mulan

Being the Disney fan I am, it’s no surprise I added another film created by this studio. Along with the Lion King, Mulan is another one of my favorite Disney films of all time! When I first watched this film, I saw the female protagonist was portrayed far differently than the other Disney princesses. She was awkward, humorous, and slightly clumsy and I was like OMG THAT’S ME!!! I swear I am so clumsy, I trip over AIR (Gawd I’m so lame).  And I saw the journey of this character who soon became the savior of CHINA. And I was enchanted and uplifted by this film! My favorite themes would have to be iconic Short Hair track which I am sure everyone who watched this movie remembers this scene! She was a complete BAWSE!

chainsmokers.jpg

  1. Chainsmokers

Closer was the track that started it all. Within time, I was completely captivated with their music! And a close second would be Paris. Although it wasn’t a title track which had much of hype, I just loved the magnificence of the musical composition and the instrumental bit at the end. It’s so uplifting and beautiful!

What are your favorite OSTs/Albums?

Until next time, keep reading and I will see you all soon with another bookish post!

Crown of Midnight Book Review (Spoiler Free)

crown of midnight.jpg

Author: Sarah J. Maas

Publisher: August 27th 2013 by Bloomsbury USA Childrens

Pages: 418

Rating: 4.5/5

GoodReads

MY EMOTIONS ARE A WRECK. R U KIDDING ME????? SARAH, WHY MUST YOU DO THIS?? I will admit when I started this book, I was a bit hesitant since I didn’t want to run into a case of Second Book Syndrome but OMG was I completely wrong! I feel as if my heart has been ripped out. MY GAWD I CAN’T.

I will advise that there are minor spoilers in the description for Throne of Glass so you have been warned! 🙂

Summary (From GoodReads):

From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie… and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

Characters:

Celaena – From the previous novel, we know that despite her strong exterior, Celaena has some internal burdens and monsters of her own. Though we do see a glimpse of it in Throne of Glass, it is interesting to see how everything is handled in the second novel. There are times when I can’t quite identify what side she is on since she typically operates on a Gray Line so her intentions and reasons are quite obscure. Again, this is a quality which is interesting to see in a character since it is not typical in YA fiction; however, it does set the playing field for more potential character growth in the future and I cannot wait to see how it will play out. Slay Gurl Slayyyyy

BP1

Chaol – We definitely learn a lot more about Chaol in this novel and I liked that we were able to finally see a little more into his background. The way in which his mind operates is different from the other characters and I appreciate that the author added the various character POVs so we clearly see that differentiation.

interesting

Dorien – Wow. Just Wow. I didn’t expect to see this much of a character growth with Dorian but he definitely was the one who surprised me the most and it is amazing to see how he progressed from the first book to the end of the second.

fang

Nehemia – OMG I honestly love Nehemia. She has such a level of maturity, intelligence and class which is worth admiring. GOALS GUYS! ABSOLUTE GOALS! There are some scenes which her words are truly inspiring and I love how dedicated she is to helping her people and even those around her.

approval-reaction-gif

Final Thoughts:

What originally starts off a character driven novel soon takes a dramatic shift to political intrigue and world building. There is definitely an addicting quality to Sarah’s writing.  The pacing is well developed due to the small length chapters which you can’t help but devour one after the other. It was no surprise that I basically flew through this book. And let’s not forget the amount of plot twists with this book. WOW. It took some unexpected turns that I did not see coming.

lion

As characters deal with the outcomes of the previous novel, Sarah continues to expand on their development and it was really well done. While it is true that Celaena is the main character of the series, Sarah does take time to venture into the lives of the other characters and show how they mature. This was an aspect I really enjoyed reading about since this unveiled themes of individualism and inner strength and ultimately showcased where their allegiances lie.

Did this book cause me to drown in emotional turmoil? Yes it did. About halfway through the novel, the atmosphere shifts to a darker tone and you can’t help but drown into the void. The ambiance is far different from the first novel with the heightened level of mystery and secrets among the characters. Hence, it is clear that the author’s plans for the direction of the rest of the series will be phenomenal.

Have any of you read Crown of Midnight? What were your thoughts on it?

Until next time, keep reading and I will see you all soon with another bookish post! 🙂

TTT-NEW

Do you know what day it is? Tuesday! And it’s the perfect time to start my first Top Ten Tuesday Post! Yayyyy!! This week’s post is about the top ten Books On My Spring 2019 TBR! And I am so excited to share these books with you all!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Without further ado, here is my Spring TBR list!

  1. Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Mass

heir of fire.jpg

Can you all believe that I am only getting into this series just now? *sighs* Now I get it guys! I get the hype behind it and OMG I am so addicted! I am definitely making it a priority to complete this series by this year and hopefully continue with the ACOTAR series. There is just something about Sarah. J. Maas’s vision, characters, and writing that pulls you into the story. So far I am on track and I am currently on this book and I can’t wait for what’s in store!

2. The Knife of Never Letting Go

chaos walking 1.jpg

I saw this book circulating around booktube from some time now and everyone had great reviews for it that it peaked my interest. I usually do not lean towards dystopian genres as much as I used to but the premise sounded really interesting. Mix together a bit of action, adventure along with twists and turns and you have me onboard! And recently, I found out that it’s going to be a movie starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley so I have to learn more on this series!

3. Keeper of the Lost Cities

keeper of the lost cities.jpg

After reading the School for Good and Evil, I really wanted to venture into more Middle Grade novels and that was when I came upon this series. And from the reviews on various platforms and Regan from PeruseProject, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to add this to my Spring TBR!

4. The Cruel Prince

cruel prince

I feel that The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King are the two books which are the most talked about in the book community right now. And nearly everyone had been raving about. It’s about time that I picked up these books ASAP haha

5. Vicious

vicious.jpg

Ever since I read the Shades of Magic series, I wanted to read more of Victoria Schwab’s adult novels. I was always apprehensive about venturing into adult literature but I feel that Victoria’s novels are the best ones to start off with. Her characters, the world and the writing is so captivating and for this reason, I can’t wait to pick up Vicious!

6. Conspiracy of Blood and Smoke

anneblankman

I actually had this book on my TBR for the longest time and I recently just finished it and OMG I have so much FEELS!! My review will be up soon so I can gush about it haha

7. Hunting Prince Dracula

hunting prince.jpg

There was no doubt I would add this to my TBR list. Ever since I read the first book in the series, Stalking Jack the Ripper, I was obsessed with this story line, the setting and the characters. I love how the author follows the perspective of a young women and her interest in forensic science especially given the time period. It was great following her journey in the first book and I can’t wait to see what mystery awaits the characters in the next one! 🙂

8. Vanishing Stair

vanishing stair.jpg

Okkkkk after that ending from Truly Devious, I guess it’s pretty obvious I am going to read the sequel haha

9. Warcross

warcross

I started WarCross sometime ago but i WAS DISTRACTED BY ANOTHER BOOK! GAHHH!!! And ever since then, I never got a chance to pick it up again. So I am making it a priority to give this book another chance this Spring, especially since I love the Sci-Fi genre and nearly everyone in the book community has nothing but great comments about this book.

10. A Curse so Dark and Lonely

acursesodark.jpg

I always loved a good fairy tale re-telling. Ever since reading the Lunar Chronicles and Heartless, I always look forward to an author’s twist on classic fairy tales and when I found out this book is a Beauty and the Beast re-telling, I was immediately interested. I also had a chance to browse through many of the blog reviews and the majority of the response was positive so I am looking forward to it!

What books are you planning to read this Spring? If you did this week’s top ten, comment with your link so I can check it out.

Girls with Sharp Sticks ARC Book Review (Spoiler Free)

girlswithsharpsticks.jpg

Author: Suzanne Young

Publication: March 19th 2019 by Simon Pulse

Pages: 400

Rating: 3.5/5

GoodReads

Thank you very much to Netgalley and the publisher for the free advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

When I first began to read a few pages of this book, I will admit that I wasn’t as hooked. It was probably due to the typical YA dystopian aura I felt from earlier books that it did not grasp me. However, it was not until the 80 page mark when I noticed a more mysterious and thrilling atmosphere looming within the pages. I grew curious and that made me more invested into wanting to complete the book. It wasn’t long before I found myself flying though the pages wanting to know what happens next. If you are a fan of dystopian/thriller novels, then I think this one is the book for you!

Summary:

The Innovations Academy prioritizes in providing the studies and activities for the girl students to be the best in society. However their curriculum is quite different from those offered today. Some of which include courses such as  “Growing a Beautiful and Prosperous Garden” to “Art Appreciation” and “Interior Design.” The main purpose is to ensure that the girls grow to be obedient young ladies – something that Mena and her friends realize is part of a darker scheme within the school. Together they hope to uncover the secrets of the school, their background and the purpose of their studies there no matter how ugly the truth may be.

My Review:

Setting : Who doesn’t love a boarding school setting? Especially if it incorporates a thrilling atmosphere such as this one? While it is quite obvious from the first few pages that the Academy is not your typical High School, it still peaks your interests with the strange behaviors of the students and faculty.

“The roses. . . They’re alive, you know. All . of them. And if you listen closely enough, you can hear their shared roots. Their common purpose. They’re beautiful, but it’s not all they are.”

Plot: I believe the main issue for me was the story line. Maybe it was because I read a lot of dystopians before but it felt a bit similar especially in the beginning. However, over time I noticed the story changing and when the elements of thrill were thrown into the mix, that was when I became invested into the story. I will admit there were moments which made my skin crawl! I didn’t expect that going into this book. And the amount of plot twists in this book too! These were the moments which the author handled very well since she cleverly weaves the threads of suspense and danger into the book where the readers would have no choice but be glued to the pages!

tumblr_nqtt6dVy311ticmhoo1_500

Characters: We follow the perspective of Mena who in the beginning we see her venture through her school life one day at a time, but a sequence of events has her questioning the origins of the Academy and because of her experiences, she grows to be very dynamic. I really liked her as a character since she truly cares for the other girls around her and develops an intense bravery despite the odds. We also see her with her close friends, Sydney, Brynn, Marcella, Annalise, Valentine, and Lennon Rose. We also have a side character by the name of Jackson who is the romantic interest; however, it was not over bearing and it did not overshadow the main plot.

Themes: Definitely do not let the Girls Private School setting fool you! While some may expect to find a lot of toxic jealousy, I was so surprised to see the amount of female friendship in this novel and it was truly one of the aspects that made it a delightful read. The feminism in this book is worth noting and I love the spin the author took on this subject and I am sure it is something that the readers will find intriguing.

demi

Overall, I did find this to be a quick easy read and it is definitely something to get you out of a reading slump for sure!

Until next time, keep reading and I will see you all in my next bookish post!

Throne of Glass Book Review (Spoiler Free)

tog.jpg

Author: Sarah J. Mass

Published: August 7th 2012 by Bloomsbury USA Children’s

Pages: 406

Genre: YA Fiction; Fantasy

Rating: 4/5

“You could rattle the stars. You could do anything, if you only dared.”

I am so late this series, it’s really SAD hahaha I do believe that this was originally a loose Cinderella re-telling that eventually took flight with it’s own unique storyline in the future books. Overall, I did find this book to be a great start to the series despite some minor flaws. Regardless, I am positive that I will continue with the series and I cannot wait to learn more about our characters and the adventures to come 🙂

Summary (From GoodReads):

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king’s council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her … but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead … quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Characters:

CelaenaStrong, Determined, and Quite Hilarious – As soon as I read the first few pages of Celaena’s introduction, I knew I was going to enjoy her character. While it is true, she can be a bit rash and arrogant, I found it refreshing to see these qualities in a female lead. I think these characteristics add to her personality and make her more interesting to learn more about. Sarah definitely incorporated a lot of layers to Celaena’s character which gave her more depth. While being feared in a country for being a ruthless assassin, there were moments which she surprised you. For example, she was pretty much a book nerd and I found myself fangirling! Sorry but I just love it when our characters love to read! I honestly found myself to grow more curious about her and I hope to see more of her growth in the future novels.

blackwidow.gif

DorianCharming, Playful, Jovial – Another character who I loved to read about! Plus, he likes to read too! Hoorayyy! I loved how his relationship with Celaena grows throughout the novel. All of his witty moments were a pleasure to read about as well! One thing I did appreciate with Dorian was seeing a bit of character growth by the end of the novel and I hope to see more of his strength in the next book.

dastan

ChaolBlunt, Skilled, Professional – I wish we had more scenes with Chaol since we couldn’t see much of his personality or backstory since he remained professional throughout the novel since he was Captain of the Guard. I felt that he was a bit restrained and was not in a position to share more information about him or his past/experiences with Celaena. Due to this issue, there was not much layers to his character so it was difficult for me to relate to him. I hope we can learn more about him in the future novels.

chaol.gif

NehemiaIntelligent, Brave, Strong – Besides having a great story line, relatable characters, and relevant themes/morals, an aspect I also enjoy seeing in books are strong female friendships. In the case with Celaena and Nehemia, their connection and growth over the novel is worth noting.

nehemia.gif

Final Thoughts:

In terms of the story line, it does resemble previous YA fiction, such as the Hunger Games with engaging in a competition, but I noticed that it did not focus too much on that aspect. The author did add an element of mystery to the story when she mentions the disappearance/slaying of the other competitors and it tends to peak your curiosity. This is where the story gains momentum, builds on the world and really pulls you into the novel. In addition, there is a bit of a love triangle but it was not overbearing as with other YA literature.

The writing was well done that everything flowed together and Sarah did her best to create cinematic images where you can visualize the scenes in your head. I also loved the playful banter between the characters which helped to lighten the atmosphere amidst the dark moments within the novel. In addition, Sarah also did a great job in adding complexity to the different relationships as the story progressed and it will be intriguing to see how these relationships grow in the upcoming novels.

Have any of you read Throne of Glass? What were your thoughts on it?

Until next time, keep reading and I will see you soon with another bookish post!

Stalking Jack the Ripper Book Review (Spoiler Free)

book1

“Fear is a hungry beast. The more you feed it, the more it grows.”

Author: Kerri Maniscalco

Publication: September 20th 2016 by Jimmy Patterson

Pages: 337

Genre: Fiction; YA; Mystery

Rating: 4/5

Summary:

Audrey Rose Wadsworth is not like many women her age – organizing tea parties, attending silk dress fittings, or jumping in on the latest gossip. Instead, she lives a secret life unbeknownst to her father as an apprentice to her Uncle, a professor of forensic medicine. Amidst her dissection studies, she stumbles upon an investigation of a notorious serial killer who rampaged the streets of London. Despite the brutality of the murders, Audrey’s curiosity and tenacity pushes her to search for answers and reclaim justice for the victims. But as she gets closer to unraveling the clues, it leads her to the most blood chilling conclusion.

Characters:

Audrey Rose WadsworthSmart, Witty, Kind, Fearless – Its official. Audrey has fallen into my top favorite female leads of all times 🙂  She has such a great combination of strength, tenacity and intelligence which makes you want to root for her throughout the novel. Despite these esteemed qualities, she does have her weaknesses too and that showcase her to be more relatable as a character. Nevertheless, I loved her curiosity and her passion for forensic science and it was so refreshing to see her fight for women given the time period that the novel is set in.

“By my blood, I will make this right or die trying.”

emma belle.gif

Thomas CreswellCharming, Witty, Arrogant – Oh Lord. This guy haha A close representation of Thomas’ character would probably be Captain Thorne from the Lunar Chronicles whom I adored from the start and Thomas was no different. I swear, the amount of eye rolls and laughter I experienced whenever he would comment with a sly and witty demeanor is exponential 🙂 And when paired with a feisty heroine with sass of her own, you get the most entertaining banter ever! I loved it!

“I don’t blame you, I am rather attractive. The tall, dark hero of your dreams, swooping in to save you with my vast intellect. You should accept my hand at once.”

bts heart gif.gif

Final Thoughts:

After finishing Truly Devious, I was in the mood for some more mystery novels and this one immediately caught my attention. Everything about the premise was so interesting and I am happy to say that the author delivered an awesome story! One aspect of the novel which I really enjoyed was the setting. The late 1800s London was very well delineated and I honestly felt as if I was walking through the streets with these characters. It was also refreshing to read about a heroine who is from a mixed background – half Indian and half British. It’s not so often I come across characters who I can relate to! And I loved the bits of Indian heritage that the author had woven into the story but I would have definitely liked to have seen more of it.

In addition, the author does a fabulous job setting the tone for the novel, creating an eerie yet mysterious atmosphere which entangles you into the story. I will say that there were certain parts of the novel which completely creeped me out! But if you are a fan of forensics and criminal investigations, then I would definitely recommend this book to you!

Have any of you read Stalking Jack the Ripper? What were your thoughts on it?

Until next time, keep reading and I will see you all with another bookish post!
