BookCon 2019 Haul + Experience

BookCon

EXPERIENCE

My first ever BookCon! I will say that part of me found it to be quite overwhelming since there were times when I was super intimidated by the crowd and wanted to crawl into a cave being the introvert that I am. HAHA But at the end of the day, it was definitely a great experience and I ended up walking away with a ton of books which I am super excited to share with you in this post!

So for some highlights – I managed to randomly bump into Sasha Alsberg and Stephanie Garber! AND OMG i WAS FangIrling So Hard! Ahem . . . thankfully my coffee kept me steady and I was able to speak coherently. Sasha was so sweet and I made sure to let her know how her channel actually sparked me to dive into my passion for reading, start blogging, instagram, etc. Stephanie was amazing as well! I rambled a bit on how Finale wrapped me in a bundle of emotions and that the series now become one of my favorite series of all time! I honestly can’t wait for her project! i am sure it will be fantastic!

Queen of Ruin by Tracy Banghart From NOVL

(Sequel to Grace and Fury – Summary may contain spoilers to the first book)

A fierce sequel full of sisterhood, heart pounding action, betrayal, and intrigue in the royal court in a series that “breathes new life into the feminist story of oppression and resistance” (Publisher’s Weekly).

Banished by Asa at the end of Grace and Fury, Nomi and Malachi find themselves powerless and headed towards their all-but-certain deaths. Now that Asa sits on the throne, he will stop at nothing to make sure Malachi never sets foot in the palace again. Their only hope is to find Nomi’s sister, Serina, on the prison island of Mount Ruin. But when Nomi and Malachi arrive, it is not the island of conquered, broken women that they expected. It is an island in the grip of revolution, and Serina–polite, submissive Serina–is its leader.

Betrayal, grief, and violence have changed both sisters, and the women of Mount Ruin have their sights set on revenge beyond the confines of their island prison. They plan to sweep across the entire kingdom, issuing in a new age of freedom for all. But first they’ll have to get rid of Asa, and only Nomi knows how.

Separated once again, this time by choice, Nomi and Serina must forge their own paths as they aim to tear down the world they know, and build something better in its place.

The stakes are higher and the battles bolder in Tracy Banghart’s unputdownable sequel to Grace and Fury.

A Match Made in Mehendi From NOVL

Fifteen-year-old Simran “Simi” Sangha comes from a long line of Indian vichole-matchmakers-with a rich history for helping parents find good matches for their grown children. When Simi accidentally sets up her cousin and a soon-to-be lawyer, her family is thrilled that she has the “gift.”

But Simi is an artist, and she doesn’t want to have anything to do with relationships, helicopter parents, and family drama. That is, until she realizes this might be just the thing to improve her and her best friend Noah’s social status. Armed with her family’s ancient guide to finding love, Simi starts a matchmaking service-via an app, of course.

But when she helps connect a wallflower of a girl with the star of the boys’ soccer team, she turns the high school hierarchy topsy-turvy, soon making herself public enemy number one.

Into the Crooked Palace by Alexandra Christo From LitJoy Crate

Into the Crooked Place begins a gritty two-book YA fantasy series from Alexandra Christo, the author of To Kill a Kingdom.

The streets of Creije are for the deadly and the dreamers, and four crooks in particular know just how much magic they need up their sleeve to survive.

Tavia, a busker ready to pack up her dark-magic wares and turn her back on Creije for good. She’ll do anything to put her crimes behind her.

Wesley, the closest thing Creije has to a gangster. After growing up on streets hungry enough to swallow the weak whole, he won’t stop until he has brought the entire realm to kneel before him.

Karam, a warrior who spends her days watching over the city’s worst criminals and her nights in the fighting rings, making a deadly name for herself.

And Saxony, a resistance fighter hiding from the very people who destroyed her family, and willing to do whatever it takes to get her revenge.

Everything in their lives is going to plan, until Tavia makes a crucial mistake: she delivers a vial of dark magic—a weapon she didn’t know she had—to someone she cares about, sparking the greatest conflict in decades. Now these four magical outsiders must come together to save their home and the world, before it’s too late. But with enemies at all sides, they can trust nobody. Least of all each other.

Descendant of the Crane by Joan He (Book Signing) – Joan He is so down to earth and awesome! I always love reading novels with an Asian setting and she made sure to recommend me some – Spin the Dawn, Tiger at Midnight and The Candle and the Flame. Will definitely be adding those to my never ending TBR!

Tyrants cut out hearts. Rulers sacrifice their own.

Princess Hesina of Yan has always been eager to shirk the responsibilities of the crown, but when her beloved father is murdered, she’s thrust into power, suddenly the queen of an unstable kingdom. Determined to find her father’s killer, Hesina does something desperate: she engages the aid of a soothsayer—a treasonous act, punishable by death… because in Yan, magic was outlawed centuries ago.

Using the information illicitly provided by the sooth, and uncertain if she can trust even her family, Hesina turns to Akira—a brilliant investigator who’s also a convicted criminal with secrets of his own. With the future of her kingdom at stake, can Hesina find justice for her father? Or will the cost be too high?

In this shimmering Chinese-inspired fantasy, debut author Joan He introduces a determined and vulnerable young heroine struggling to do right in a world brimming with deception.

Queen of the Conquered by Kheryn Callender (Book Signing)

An ambitious young woman with the power to control minds seeks vengeance against the royals who murdered her family, in a Caribbean-inspired fantasy world embattled by colonial oppression.

Sigourney Rose is the only surviving daughter of a noble lineage on the islands of Hans Lollik. When she was a child, her family was murdered by the islands’ colonizers, who have massacred and enslaved generations of her people—and now, Sigourney is ready to exact her revenge.

When the childless king of the islands declares that he will choose his successor from amongst eligible noble families, Sigourney uses her ability to read and control minds to manipulate her way onto the royal island and into the ranks of the ruling colonizers. But when she arrives, prepared to fight for control of all the islands, Sigourney finds herself the target of a dangerous, unknown magic.

Someone is killing off the ruling families to clear a path to the throne. As the bodies pile up and all eyes regard her with suspicion, Sigourney must find allies among her prey and the murderer among her peers… lest she become the next victim.

Queen of the Conquered reckons with the many layers of power and privilege in a lush fantasy world—perfect for readers of V. E. Schwab, Kiersten White, and Marlon James.

The Tenth Girl From Fierce Reads – I happen to receive this book by chance since this was a mystery ARC that Fierce Reads announced on twitter. I did not know about it until one of my fellow book readers advised me and I was so fortunate that they still had a copy. And its a paranormal thriller, so I am super excited for this one!

Simmering in Patagonian myth, The Tenth Girl is a gothic psychological thriller with a haunting twist.

At the very southern tip of South America looms an isolated finishing school. Legend has it that the land will curse those who settle there. But for Mavi—a bold Buenos Aires native fleeing the military regime that took her mother—it offers an escape to a new life as a young teacher to Argentina’s elite girls.

Mavi tries to embrace the strangeness of the imposing house—despite warnings not to roam at night, threats from an enigmatic young man, and rumors of mysterious Others. But one of Mavi’s ten students is missing, and when students and teachers alike begin to behave as if possessed, the forces haunting this unholy cliff will no longer be ignored.

One of these spirits holds a secret that could unravel Mavi’s existence. In order to survive she must solve a cosmic mystery—and then fight for her life.

Eight Will Fall From Fierce Reads

In a land where magic is outlawed, eight criminals led by seventeen-year-old Larkin are sent on a mission to kill an ancient evil that plagues their kingdom. Descending into an underground realm full of unspeakable horrors, Larkin and her party must use their forbidden magic to survive what lies in wait, teeth sharp and jaws deadly.

As she fights for her life, Larkin finds a light in Amias, a fellow outlaw with a notorious past. Soon Larkin and Amias realize their fates are entwined. The eight of them were chosen for a reason.

But as the dangers multiply and her band of felons are picked off one by one, Larkin must confront a terrible truth: They were never meant to return.

Sarah Harian crafts a thrilling, high-octane fantasy adventure that explores the often-thin line between light and darkness, good and evil.

Beyond the Black Door From Fierce Reads

Kamai was warned never to open the black door, but she didn’t listen …

Everyone has a soul. Some are beautiful gardens, others are frightening dungeons. Soulwalkers―like Kamai and her mother―can journey into other people’s souls while they sleep.

But no matter where Kamai visits, she sees the black door. It follows her into every soul, and her mother has told her to never, ever open it.

When Kamai touches the door, it is warm and beating, like it has a pulse. When she puts her ear to it, she hears her own name whispered from the other side. And when tragedy strikes, Kamai does the unthinkable: she opens the door.

A.M. Strickland’s imaginative dark fantasy features court intrigue and romance, a main character coming to terms with her asexuality, and twists and turns as a seductive mystery unfolds that endangers not just Kamai’s own soul, but the entire kingdom …

Wicked as You Wish by Rin Chupeco

Tala Warnock has little use for magic – as a descendant of Maria Makiling, the legendary Filipina heroine, she negates spells, often by accident. But her family’s old ties to the country of Avalon (frozen, bespelled, and unreachable for almost 12 years) soon finds them guarding its last prince from those who would use his kingdom’s magic for insidious ends.

And with the rise of dangerous spelltech in the Royal States of America; the appearance of the firebird, Avalon’s deadliest weapon, at her doorstep; and the re-emergence of the Snow Queen, powerful but long thought dead, who wants nothing more than to take the firebird’s magic for her own – Tala’s life is about to get even more complicated….

Kingdom of Exiles by Maxym M. Martineau

Fantastic Beasts meets Assassin’s Creed in this epic, gripping fantasy romance from debut author Maxym M. Martineau.

Exiled beast charmer Leena Edenfrell is in deep trouble. Empty pockets forced her to sell her beloved magical beasts on the black market—an offense punishable by death—and now there’s a price on her head. With the realm’s most talented murderer-for-hire nipping at her heels, Leena makes him an offer he can’t refuse: powerful mythical creatures in exchange for her life.

If only it were that simple. Unbeknownst to Leena, the undying ones are bound by magic to complete their contracts, and Noc cannot risk his brotherhood of assassins…not even to save the woman he can no longer live without.

TIPS AND ADVICE

Plan Ahead – You have no idea how planning ahead actually helped me with my first trip to BookCon. When I initially started researching about other reader’s experiences, nearly everyone had planned out a full itinerary but trust me, it helps so much. When you first arrive to the Showfloor, it can be overwhelming since there are so many publishers, vendors, and exhibitors who have booths throughout the show. Therefore,  one of the most strategic things you can do is plan ahead. So for a lot of first timers, you may ask – How can I? I would suggest following your favorite publishers on social media such as Twitter, Instagram, etc. They will most likely release their schedule within 2 weeks before the show starts and sometimes even earlier so it is within our best interest to compile a schedule of all the events and arc drops which we want to attend. In addition, BookCon would also release a schedule of all panels and autograph sessions as well so make sure to include them as well.

Autograph Sessions – The autograph sessions at the main Autographing stage will be revealed online a couple of weeks before the show. BookCon enables one general ticket holder to sign up for two autographing sessions per day. These tickets tend to go fast so if you really want to meet an author I would advise that you try to sign up for them as soon as you can.

Ticket Information – There are 3 type of tickets: Weekend, Saturday and Sunday. There are also VIP tickets available as well. Tickets will need to be purchased online and if you are able to purchase them early, they will be mailed to you a few weeks before the show. I highly suggest that you purchase your tickets as soon as you can so you can avoid the Will Call Line in the morning of the show and that can take up time.

Earlier the Better – I am pretty sure a lot of other bookbloggers have stated this before but depending on your schedule and what you specifically want to do at BookCon, try to arrive early so you will be able to attend these events. Each year, the convention grows and grows so it is best that we keep this mind and prepare ourselves when attending the show.

Pack Snacks – With the time you spend waiting for ARC drops, autographing lines or simply strolling through the show floor, I guarantee that you will loose track of time there. I most certainly did since I had a pretty packed schedule! Therefore, I highly suggest that you pack some snacks to keep you energized throughout the day just in case some events may run longer than expected.

Take a Light Jacket/Sweater/ Comfortable Shoes – The convention center can get quite cold so I would suggest that you bring a light sweater. In addition, it is highly advisable that you wear some comfortable shoes. I made sure to go in with some flats and I was so thankful that I did. But even with the amount of walking and standing in line, my legs were still screaming at me by the end of the event HAHA

Choose ARCs which you are interested in – ARCs are meant to serve a promotional purpose for authors so when you are waiting for an ARC, please try to get ones which you are interested in and are willing to provide a review on GoodReads, BookBlog, Amazon etc. This would even help newer authors to gain recognition for their work and it would overall help in the actual release of the novel.

Be Polite – This one is pretty self explanatory but please be polite while waiting in line. I did not have too many issues during the ARC drop lines but I have heard some unpleasant accounts from other attendees so please be courteous to one another and be polite. We are all book lovers here and we all want to have a good time in the event. So even if  you are unable to receive the book you want, then no worries – You can always get it when it releases! Hakuna Matata! 🙂

I hope you all enjoyed this post! Have you ever been to BookCon? How was your experience?

Until next time, keep reading and I will see you all soon with another bookish post! 🙂

The Heartbreak Cure by Amanda Ashby

Hello everyone! Hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving and are looking forward to the Holiday season! This has got to be of my favorite times of the year where I can snuggle up in a blanket, grab a cup of cocoa and bury my head in a book! 🙂

And for today’s post, I am so excited to announce that I am collaborating with an awesome author, Amanda Ashby, writer of The Heartbreak Cure to bring you all exclusive content about her new book! First, let’s look into a brief summary of this sweet contemporary read!

36476507.jpg

Author: Amanda Ashby
Publication Date: December 4th 2017
Publisher: Entangled: Crush
Summary:

How to get over a heartbreak:

Step one: Eat your body weight in brownies.

Step two: Throw yourself into your dreams of becoming a famous writer.

Step three: Beg your (hottie) ex-neighbor to act as your fake boyfriend.

Step four: Skip step three unless you’re ready for some serious fallout.

After being dumped and humiliated over the summer, Cat Turner does what any sane girl would do. She asks bad boy Alex Locke to be her fake boyfriend and show the world (and her editor at the school newspaper) that she’s fine. Problem is, the more time she spends with Alex, the more she risks getting her heart broken. For real this time.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains a swoony bad boy who will melt your heart, brownies, and witty banter. One, two, or all three might prove addictive…

Words from the Author 🙂

Hi Ash, thank you so much for hosting me, and helping me to celebrate the release of The Heartbreak Cure! The thing I get asked the most often is where do I get my ideas from. And most of the time I have no clear answer because the creative process is so weird that sometimes ideas merge and meld in the mind and it’s hard to pinpoint the actual beginning. But in the case of this book I remember exactly how it started. I was sitting in the sun while a builder was inside my house ripping down the kitchen wall. Oh and I was meant to be working on another project that was due in a few months. Instead I got this vision of a girl sitting under a tree writing a slash and burn story on the guy who broke her heart. I was so intrigued as to what he’d done to her that I kept writing to find out more. Then when her hottie ex-neighbor climbed over the fence I was hooked. Now I must add that not all of my books come about so easily. Normally there is kicking, screaming and tears—and not from the characters. But I can honestly say that this book was a real delight to write. And I absolutely refuse to mention just how many brownies were eaten in the process…

Excerpt:

“Please don’t tell my mom that one. She doesn’t need any more bad puns to put on her cards,” Cat said as Alex’s cell phone buzzed. He read the text message before looking up.

“You could tell her yourself—or not tell her, as the case might be. She wants you to call her.”

“What?” Cat said in surprise before dragging out her own phone and staring at the dead screen. She’d obviously played one too many games on it during math. “How did she even get your number?”

He shrugged. “I guess Joe gave it to her.”

“Oh.” It seemed Cat wasn’t the only forgetting Alex wasn’t her real boyfriend.

The darkening afternoon sky was a spectrum of blues as he held up his cell. “You can use mine.”

“Thanks.” She took the handset. The screen was cracked, and there was a fine coat of grease on the keys. She grinned at his screen saver, which was of Snoopy dressed up as the Red Baron. “Frozen and now Snoopy? I always knew you had a marshmallow heart.”

“Yeah. I’m a total softie,” his voice was light, but his knuckles whitened. Cat winced. Franklin had tarred and feathered him with the same brush they’d used for his parents. The worst thing was he seemed to believe it, too. Frustration gnawed at her chest.

How I am the only one who can see how amazing he really is?

Her mom answered on the second ring and explained she’d been held up in a sales meeting and it was going to run for another two hours, which meant she couldn’t pick Cat from school.

“It’s fine. I’ll hitch a ride with Nikki,” Cat said, promising to charge up her cell phone, eat some vegetables with her dinner, and on no account throw a house party.

“You’ll never guess what just happened.” Nikki came running outside, her eyes glowing and her cheeks bright.

“Mackenzie fell into a vat of glitter?” Cat suggested. “Or glue?” Alex added.

“Wrong. Parker just asked me if I wanted to grab a burger with him. Well, he said you guys could come, but I told him you were busy. Right. Right?” Nikki narrowed her gaze so there could be no misunderstandings.

“Right,” she agreed with a smile before recalling her transport predicament. “Go, have fun, and don’t tell him about the time you beat your brothers up. It will only scare him.”

“Duh.” Nikki grinned and went racing over to Parker, who was nervously chewing his lip.

“I can give you a lift,” Alex said once they were alone.

“Are you sure? I feel like every day I impose on you more,” she said, achingly aware of how close they were standing.

“What kind of fake boyfriend would leave his girl stranded?” He shrugged.

His girl.

His. Girl.

She tested out the words like a new flavor. Her body trembled in response and she nodded. “Okay, great.”

 –

He grabbed a shower and was just toweling off his hair when there was a knock at the door.  He frowned as he hastily dragged his T-shirt on and stepped into his jeans.

It would be Pete, the other mechanic, probably kicked out again by his girlfriend and wanting to bunk on Alex’s couch. He yanked the door open, and his mouth dropped.

Cat.

She was wearing her favorite band T-shirt tied in at her waist to show off just a hint of stomach. She looked cute as all hell. His skin prickled, and his eyes drifted to her full lips, slick with some kind of pale gloss. Edible.

Oh, crap.

“What are you doing here?” The words came out harsher than he intended, and he watched the color rise in her cheeks. Smooth.

“Hey,” she said as she clutched at her backpack. Her hair was hanging down around her shoulders, and her dark eyes were shining. “Your hair’s wet.”

“Shower,” he said before wincing. He was really mastering the inane today.

“Oh.” She looked down to her boots and then peered up from between her lashes. “Is it weird I’m here?”

Weird? Dangerous? Brain melting?
Tough one to call.
“Um, no I guess it’s fine. Is everything okay? It’s not Bennet?”

“What?” Her face wrinkled before understanding seemed to dawn. “No, nothing like that. It’s good news, and I wanted to tell you, but then it seemed dumb to call when I had to run an errand and was walking straight past here. But then when I knocked, I suddenly wondered if it—”

“Might be weird,” he finished. She was still on the top stair while he clutched the door in some kind of stand-off. “Do you want to come in?”

“Sure. I mean, yeah,” she said, though her mouth was set in an uncertain line as he stepped back. He caught her scent—it was sunshine and oak trees and safety.

And it could lead directly to trouble.

“Cool.” He took another step back as she swept past and scanned the room, no doubt taking in the wallpaper, which was an explosion of brown swirls. It might’ve worked in some hipster café, but in a beat-up old apartment it was headache inducing.

“I’m not sure what I imagined your place would be like, but this wasn’t it.” She looked around.

“Yeah, well, I’m in the middle of changing decorators. You know how tough it can be.”

“The pain is real, my friend.” She grinned as she walked over to the old couch.

YAYYY!!!! I am so happy to share this new novel with all of you! It sounds like such a fun read and I can’t wait to start it. Thank you to Amanda and Entangled Crush for reaching out to me to collaborate for this great contemporary. Looks like another cute novel is officially added to my TBR!

Top 5 Urban Fantasy and Epic Fantasy Books

Hello everyone! It’s time for the final post for the Entangled Teen Event, Team Urban vs. Team Epic Fantasy which is to name your top 5 Urban Fantasy or Epic Fantasy books. I really can’t pick favorites with genres especially with these two since I randomly switch back and forth between both of them. So please enjoy my picks (in no particular order) for the Top 5 Urban Fantasy and Epic Fantasy Books.

entteen-urbanbattleepic300x300opt1

GoodReads defines Urban Fantasy as a “subset of contemporary fantasy, consisting of novels and stories with supernatural and/or magical elements set in contemporary, real-world, urban settings–as opposed to ‘traditional’ fantasy set in imaginary locations.”

Top 5 Urban Fantasy

raven

The Raven Cycle – One of the most unique YA novels out there! The concept of fortune tellers, ghosts and other paranormal features made this series such a delight to read. But the final piece of puzzle had to be the characters who were all amazing to read about and you can not help but grow attached to them over time.

angelfall

Angelfall – I absolutely love the incorporation of the fallen angels into the post- apocalyptic genre. It was so unique and thrilling I just could not stop reading!

harry-potter-uk-edition

Harry Potter – Although the world of Harry Potter is an independent world of its own, there is still some crossover between the real world and the wizarding world which is why I added this into the Urban Fantasy category. I think its safe to say that this series is beyond phenomenal from its characters to the plot lines and the world building!  This series was practically my childhood.

percy

Percy Jackson – I only started reading Percy Jackson after a fellow blogger recommended it to me and I absolutely loved it! It was amazing to see the imaginative incorporation of mythological creatures into the real world

hushhush.jpg

Hush Hush series – Another fallen angels series which I quite frankly enjoyed! I loved how the author maintained the mysterious aura throughout the series with the usage of paranormal beings/occurrences

entteen-urbanbattleepic300x300opt2

According to GoodReads, Epic Fantasy is defined as ” set in invented or parallel worlds and takes some elements from High Fantasy but in a bigger and more epic way (e.g. the stakes are greater; the land/world is in peril; the conflict shakes all who dwell in the world of the story).”

Top 5 Epic Fantasy

An Ember in the Ashes

An Ember in the Ashes – A brilliant and electrifying debut set in a brutal world inspired by the Roman Empire. It is so fast paced and the stakes are so high in this novel that you end up on the edge of your seat at certain moments! A great thrilling read!

Six of Crows

Six of Crows – Set in the Grishaverse, this book follows a group of thieves and spies from the slums of Ketterdam who try to pull off an incredible and almost impossible heist. Six of Crows is set in a world inspired by Russia during the Tsar’s rule but it also incorporates a magical system of the Grishas. This book was amazing and the characters are so well developed as much as the world itself, it was such an enjoyable read!

acotar

A Court of Thorns and Roses – Now I know this is slightly more New Adult but I wanted to add this onto the list since I believed it fit well within the Epic Fantasy genre. Believe it or not, this is my first Sarah J Mass book and despite the slow start, I ended up enjoying this book at the end. This is set in a complete fantasy universe despite switching from the human and fae worlds and Sarah does a fabulous job in developing her world to make it seem so believable and from what I am hearing, the second book only gets better and I can not wait to pick that one up!

falling.jpg

Falling Kingdoms – Described as the Young Adult version of the Game of Thrones, the world of Falling Kingdoms is merciless, intricate but also magical. We even dive into the political tensions between the various kingdoms, assassins, and other magical beings as well.

Throne-Of-Glass-Series-660x344.png

Throne of Glass – Of course we have the ever so popular Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas who is the Queen of writing Epic Fantasy since she has such amazing world building and character development skills!

What are your favorite Urban Fantasy and Epic Fantasy books?

~Ash~

Erica Cameron – Island of Exiles (The Ryogan Chronicles, #1):

“Why do I love epic fantasy? It’s a blank slate. We can erase all of our preconceived notions of society and law and even science, throwing all of that over the side of a cliff. Epic fantasy lets us push humanity well past the breaking point with ever more impossible landscapes and situations. It lets us see what we could be if only we let ourselves get there. Plus, epic fantasy is, well, epic!”

Amber Mitchell – Garden of Thorns:

“When I read and write, it’s because I want to escape and nothing gets you farther from your troubles than the distant shores of entirely new worlds. Epic fantasy invites you onto its tropical beaches, into its lush jungles and through its exotic cityscapes, shaking out its uncharted map for you to explore. Every page brims with fantastic characters questing, battling men and extraordinary beasts alike with magic flowing from nimble fingertips and daring sword fights. The allure of entirely new cultures, the epic stakes, swoon-worthy romances, and the flowing dresses of epic fantasy will always have my heart.”

L.E. Sterling – True North (True Born, #2):

“Don’t get me wrong — #TeamUrban is great. I love time jumpers and magicians running around a book. They make you blink and question what you saw. But I prefer life in a funhouse mirror. Give me a goblin market. Give me a warrior queen with immortal blood. I want the snow queen’s glass shard to be embedded in my eye. I want to completely escape the bounds of reality — not be shackled by them. I don’t want to just question my perceptions — I want to know I’m not in Kansas any longer.”

As they say in Dominion, sometimes it’s not you…it’s your DNA.

Nicole Luiken – In Truth & Ashes (Otherselves, #3):

“First for the endlessly inventive magic. Second for the fascinating new worlds to explore. Third for the fantastic creatures that dwell there: dragons, gargoyles, demi-gods and phoenixes are just a few of the ones I’ve used.

Epic fantasy gives a writer a bigger canvas to paint. Instead of a city, a country or even worlds. Wars. Heroes. Villains. Destinies. Everything is bigger is epic fantasy. The stakes are higher, instead of a single group, the fate of a world can hang in the balance.”

Rebekah L. Purdy – The Summer Marked (The Winter People, #2):

“Epic Fantasy is an escape from the “real world” and takes you to other lands, places you can only dream of, which is why I love it so much.  And there’s so much more opportunity to really explore new creatures and characters within these worlds. I mean, who doesn’t like the idea of stepping through a closet and finding a cool fantasy world? LOL.

I’m also a big fan of the epic battles (think Lord of the Rings or Throne of Glass). Girl with a sword=Awesome.”

I really loved learning the various reasons why authors loved the Urban Fantasy or the Epic Fantasy genre. This is primarily why I love reading in the first place. In both cases, the fantasy books serve as an escape from reality through which you can dive into an unknown world and meet amazing characters or learn about the fantasy political and magic system. The experience itself can be unearthly or dreamlike.

From Team Epic Fantasy, I personally liked L.E. Sterling reasoning, “I want to completely escape the bounds of reality — not be shackled by them” and Nicole Luiken who saidEpic fantasy gives a writer a bigger canvas to paint. Instead of a city, a country or even worlds. Wars. Heroes. Villains. Destinies. Everything is bigger is epic fantasy.I found both examples to be the reason why I sometimes reach for an Epic Fantasy book.

Do any of you guys have a preference over which genre you like the most? Are you Team Urban Fantasy or Team Epic Fantasy?

I personally have a very difficult time choosing whether I love one genre over the other since they both have their own individual charm. How about we check out what the authors have to say about Urban Fantasy?

Team Urban: Why I Love Urban Fantasy!

1 . Shonna Slayton – Spindle:

“Urban fantasy reminds me that our own world is magical. We are so used to the way our world works that we take for granted how incredible it is that our heart beats, our brain imagines, that our eyes see color.

As a writer, urban fantasy allows me to open up my imagination on multiple planes. I still work with the real world, but I get to add layers onto that. It’s like going from black and white TV to color. Like Dorothy in dusty old Kansas stepping into the colorful land of Oz.”

Book Description:

In a world where fairies lurk and curses linger, love can bleed like the prick of a finger…

Briar Rose knows her life will never be a fairy tale. She’s raising her siblings on her own, her wages at the spinning mill have been cut, and the boy she thought she had a future with has eyes for someone else. Most days it feels like her best friend, Henry Prince, is the only one in her corner…though with his endless flirty jokes, how can she ever take him seriously?

When a mysterious peddler offers her a “magic” spindle that could make her more money, sneaking it into the mill seems worth the risk. But then one by one, her fellow spinner girls come down with the mysterious sleeping sickness…and Briar’s not immune.

If Briar wants to save the girls—and herself—she’ll have to start believing in fairy tales…and in the power of a prince’s kiss.

2. Danielle Ellison – Salt (Salt, #1):

“Whether it’s witches, demons, ghosts or other types monsters, there’s nothing like escaping the sometimes mundane reality of our world, or giving what we know every day a spice of fantasy.  Filled with kick-ass heroines who aren’t afraid to fight for what they believe in (and hot, just-as-fierce love interests) Urban Fantasy inspires you look beyond what you see and be more than you think you can be. Plus, life is more with some magic: more dangerous, more unpredictable, more chaotic, more fun.”

Book Description:

Penelope is a witch, part of a secret society protecting humans from demon attacks. But when she was a child, a demon killed her parents—and stole her magic. Since then, she’s been pretending to be something she’s not, using her sister’s magic to hide her own loss, to prevent being sent away.

When she’s finally given the chance to join the elite demon-hunting force, Penelope thinks that will finally change. With her sister’s help, she can squeeze through the tests and get access to the information she needs to find “her” demon. To take back what was stolen.

Then she meets Carter. He’s cute, smart, and she can borrow his magic, too. He knows her secret—but he also has one of his own.

Suddenly, Penelope’s impossible quest becomes far more complicated. Because Carter’s not telling her everything, and it’s starting to seem like the demons have their own agenda…and they’re far too interested in her.

3. Rachel Harris – My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century (My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century, #1):

Book Description:

But when her curiosity leads her to an unusual gypsy tent, she exits…right into Renaissance Firenze.

Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors, the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous aspiring artist Lorenzo. Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns into an Italian forever?

4. Gloria Craw – Atlantis Rising (Atlantis Rising, #1):

“I love Urban Fantasy because it infuses normal life with myth and magic. It’s so exciting to have something in common with a character who finds a magic object, special ability or a secret origin. The possible ways her courage and passion might be tested are endless. When she does triumph against fantastic odds, I’m left feeling inspired and reassured that I can overcome great obstacles in my everyday life too. Urban Fantasy reminds me that the ordinary in us can sometimes be…extraordinary.”

Book Description:

We’ve stayed hidden too long… I am different. I have always been different, but no one can know or my life will be in danger. So I hide in plain sight, wearing drab clothes and thick glasses and trying to be invisible. I’m so good at hiding, no one has ever noticed me. Until Ian…the mysterious and oh-so-cute boy I know I need to avoid.

Now I have been seen. And more terrifying still, I am wanted—by those who would protect me and those who would destroy everything and everyone I love. But if they’re all terrified about who I am, wait until they see what I can do…

5. Brenda Drake – Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers, #2):

“I’m such a fan of Urban Fantasy for many reasons, but mostly because writers can take our normal world and, either secret or not, add a dash of the fantastical to it. With mystical creatures hiding from humans or living side by side with them, deliciously nefarious things can happen. There’s just something extraordinary about urban fantasy. It’s the ability of the writer to look at something normal in the human world and mix it up. Changing a simple book into something that can transport someone from library to library or hiding a zoo of magical beasts in a common suitcase.”

Guardian of Secrets_updated1600.jpg

Book Description:

Being a Sentinel isn’t all fairytales and secret gardens. Sure, jumping through books into the world’s most beautiful libraries to protect humans from mystical creatures is awesome. No one knows that better than Gia Kearns, but she could do without the part where people are always trying to kill her. Oh, and the fact that Pop and her had to move away from her friends and life as she knew it.

And if that isn’t enough, her boyfriend, Arik, is acting strangely. Like, maybe she should be calling him “ex,” since he’s so into another girl. But she doesn’t have time to be mad or even jealous, because someone has to save the world from the upcoming apocalypse, and it looks like that’s going to be Gia.

6. Chris Cannon – Fanning the Flames (Going Down in Flames, #4):

  1.      There are no maidens that need to be rescued in urban fantasy. More than likely the females are the ones kicking ass.
  2.      I love the snarky banter that occurs when you throw modern day characters into            strange/magical/supernatural circumstances.
  3.      Anything is possible in urban fantasy. There are no rules about what types of                  paranormal creatures you can have. If you want to create dragons that breathe fire, ice, wind, sonic waves, and lightning, you can, just like I did in Going Down In Flames *cough cough* shameless self promotion

7. Tara Fuller – Inbetween (Kissed by Death, #1):

9781620610138_FC.jpg

Book Description:

Death doesn’t fall in love. Usually. Since the car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s life has been a freaky—and unending—lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taking pictures of life instead of living it. Falling in love with a boy was never part of the plan. Falling for a reaper who makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option.

It’s not easy being dead, especially for a reaper in love with a girl fate has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow reapers give him hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn’t let her die before, and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he loves from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the only thing he has left…his soul.
